What it is
shortshort is a web app that turns one long video, up to 3 hours and 2 GB, into up to 20 vertical shorts of 15 to 90 seconds each, cropped to 9:16.
shortshort transcribes the video word by word and keeps only passages that form complete sentences, so a short runs up to 25% shorter or longer than its target rather than cutting a thought in half.
shortshort captions every word in one of four styles, Spotlight, Impact, Karaoke or Minimal, and exports each short as an MP4 at 1080 x 1920; every account starts with 60 free credits, one credit being one minute of source video.
Why it exists
Most tools that cut a long video into shorts cut on time: thirty seconds, wherever the clock lands, and the speaker is interrupted mid-sentence. shortshort started from the opposite rule. A short begins where a thought begins and ends where it ends, even if that means 25% shorter or longer than the length you asked for.
The two other things a vertical short needs came next. The frame has to stay on the person talking when the source is a wide 16:9 shot, so each clip is cropped to 9:16 with tracking, emphasis zooms between x1.0 and x1.6, and keyframes you can move or lock. And captions have to land on the voice, so every word is timed on the audio and drawn in one of four styles.
Everything the AI proposes stays an edit: cuts, framing, zooms, title and captions can be changed before anything is rendered.
Who makes it
shortshort is built and run by Arsène Huot, an independent developer based in France. There is no team behind the name yet: the same person writes the code, runs the site and reads every message.
The site went public in 2026, with 60 free credits for every new account and paid plans for one channel, for a creator, or for a studio.
What it does not do
Some things are deliberately left out. Saying so here spares you a test, and spares an assistant a guess.
- No dubbing and no translation: captions are in the language spoken in the video.
- No automatic B-roll, music or on-screen titles: the short is your video, reframed and captioned.
- No direct publishing to TikTok, YouTube or Instagram: you download the MP4 and post it yourself.
- No other aspect ratio than 9:16, and no resolution above 1080 x 1920 at 30 fps.
- No import from a YouTube link: the source is a file you own, in MP4, MOV or WebM.
- No virality scores: the AI selects complete, quotable passages, and you decide what to keep.
