Do YouTube Shorts help long-form videos?
What YouTube says about Shorts and long-form views: Shorts can't hurt long-form recommendations, and the Related Video link points viewers to the full video.
The short answer
According to YouTube Help, Shorts performance doesn't negatively impact long-form video recommendations: Shorts can help with audience discovery but can't hurt your video performance. To send Shorts viewers to a longer video, a YouTube Blog post of 14 July 2026 names the Related Videos link as the most effective tool. You add that link to each Short in YouTube Studio. No YouTube page promises a number of extra views.

What YouTube says: Shorts can't hurt long-form recommendations
As of 24 October 2026, the YouTube Help page "Search & discovery tips" for Shorts says, under Things to keep in mind: "Shorts performance doesn't negatively impact long form Video recommendations." It adds that Shorts can help with audience discovery but can't hurt your video performance.
The same page explains how a Short is ranked: on its own performance and on what each viewer likes. YouTube looks at whether viewers choose to watch it or swipe away, how long they stay, and whether they enjoyed it, from likes and post-watch surveys. The page also says there is no minimum posting cadence required for your videos to perform well.
Not hurting is not the same as converting. The YouTube Blog post of 14 July 2026, "How to convert YouTube Shorts views into long-form channel growth", says audiences are often segmented: some viewers might watch only Shorts and may never click on a 10-minute video, while others browse the Shorts feed to discover new channels before committing to longer content. Its advice is a deliberate strategy to bring Shorts viewers to longer videos.

The Related Video link: the bridge YouTube points to
The blog post puts it plainly: "The most effective tool for this is the Related Videos link." The feature attaches a clickable link to a Short that routes viewers to a long-form video, a live stream or another Short on your channel. Viewers see it below your channel handle in the Shorts player.
You add it after uploading the Short. In YouTube Studio, open Content, click the Short, select a Related Video from your channel and click Save. YouTube Help says the option needs advanced feature access, and the linked video must be public or unlisted and follow the Community Guidelines. YouTube's feature access page lists adding a Related Video to a Short among the advanced features.
One case is automatic. Shorts made with YouTube Studio's Video Clips & Shorts tool get their source video added as the related video, unless the Short is private, unlisted or made for kids.
- Match the viewer's intent: the blog's example links a Short that teaches a quick hack to a full tutorial, and a Short about a product to the full review.
- Ask for the click: the blog suggests a spoken and visual call to action in the final 5 seconds of the Short.
- Keep the promise fast: it says the first 5 to 10 seconds of the long video should address the topic the Short promised, without slow channel graphics or unrelated updates.
- Make the clip stand alone: for moments clipped from existing long-form content, it says the Short should make sense without outside context.
Clips cut from your own long videos
A clip cut from a long video already has an obvious place to send viewers: the full video it came from. Link each clip to it with a Related Video, and open the clip where the thought starts so that it makes sense on its own, as the blog post asks.
Shorts and long videos count on different paths for the YouTube Partner Program. YouTube's YPP overview says watch hours from Shorts in the Shorts Feed don't count towards the watch-hour threshold, while qualified Shorts views count on their own path. Hours that viewers spend on the full video count as qualified watch hours if it is a long-form video you have set public. Our guide to the 2027 YPP rules goes through both paths.
None of the pages we read gives a share of Shorts viewers who go on to watch the long video, and none promises that they will. What the pages describe is a link you add and a Short that earns the click.
Does posting Shorts hurt your channel?
Not its long-form videos, according to the YouTube Help page quoted above. The same page says no minimum posting cadence is required, so posting Shorts is not an obligation either.
What YouTube's policies restrict is the content, not the format. Its Spam Policy does not allow using automated tools or AI to churn out high volumes of similar content with minimal changes, while testing new creation tools or posting a few variations of a video is fine. The channel monetization policies review the channel as a whole, reused and repetitive content included. Our guides to the October 2026 originality update and to how many Shorts to post per day cover both.
With shortshort
shortshort cuts Shorts from a long video you own: a file in MP4, MOV or WebM, up to 2 GB, or the link of your own public or unlisted YouTube video, downloaded on our servers at up to 720p with its audio. It listens to the whole video before choosing passages. The AI picks passages that open and close on complete sentences, then checks the end of each short against the transcript; when an exact ending cannot be confirmed, the studio says so. Shorts can be scheduled on a connected YouTube channel from the Publish page, on every plan including Free; publishing to TikTok is in early access. shortshort does not set the related video on YouTube: add it to each Short in YouTube Studio, pointing to the full video. It has no say in how YouTube recommends a Short or a long video. A new account gets 30 credits once, no card, and 1 credit is 1 minute of source video.

Not its long-form videos, according to YouTube. Its Help page on Shorts discovery says Shorts performance doesn't negatively impact long-form video recommendations, and that Shorts can't hurt your video performance. It also says no minimum posting cadence is required. YouTube's policies still apply to what you post: its Spam Policy does not allow automated tools that churn out high volumes of similar content.
How do I link a Short to my long video?
Add a Related Video. In YouTube Studio, open Content, click the Short, select a Related Video from your channel and click Save. It needs advanced feature access, and the linked video must be public or unlisted. Viewers see a clickable link below your channel handle. Shorts made with YouTube Studio's Video Clips & Shorts tool get their source video linked automatically, unless private, unlisted or made for kids.
Do Shorts views count toward long-form watch hours?
No. YouTube's YPP overview says watch hours from Shorts in the Shorts Feed don't count towards the watch-hour threshold. Shorts count on their own path, qualified Shorts views. Hours viewers spend on a long-form video you have set public count as qualified watch hours.
Does shortshort add the Related Video link for me?
No. When shortshort publishes a short to a connected YouTube channel, it sends the video with its title, description, tags, language and visibility, but no related video. Add the link to each Short in YouTube Studio, pointing to the full video it was cut from.
