How long can a YouTube Short be in 2026, and what length suits a clip from a long video?

YouTube Shorts can run up to three minutes if square or vertical. The official rules, checked September 2026, and how long to make a clip from a long video.

The short answer

As of September 2026, a YouTube Short can be up to three minutes long, and it must be square or vertical to count as a Short. YouTube's help pages give no ideal length. For a clip cut from a long talk or podcast, let the thought set the length, and keep one minute in mind: YouTube's help pages disagree on Content ID claims for Shorts over one minute.

The limit: three minutes, if the video is square or vertical

As of September 22, 2026, YouTube Help says a Short can be up to three minutes long. The YouTube Blog announced the change on October 3, 2024, and it applied from October 15, 2024. You can upload Shorts of that length from the YouTube app and from YouTube Studio on a computer.

Length alone does not decide. For standard channels, a video uploaded on or after October 15, 2024 is classified as a Short when it is square or vertical and three minutes or shorter. A vertical video over three minutes is not uploaded as a Short. A short video in a wider ratio such as 16:9 stays long-form: that is YouTube's own advice if you do not want a Short.

Older uploads were not reclassified. YouTube left videos uploaded before October 15, 2024 as they were, so a square or vertical video longer than one minute from before that date stays a long-form video. Official Artist Channels and channels linked to a music Content Owner had a later cutoff, December 8, 2025.

Why the one-minute mark still matters

Three minutes is the cap, but one minute is still a line in YouTube's rules. YouTube says nothing changes for Shorts under one minute. Above it, the rules on Content ID claims are changing, and the official pages do not agree.

Two help pages, 'Understand three-minute YouTube Shorts' and 'Music eligibility for YouTube Shorts', say that from September 24, 2026, new Shorts between one and three minutes with an active Content ID claim (the music page says copyright claim) will no longer be automatically blocked and may remain playable. The music page is scoped to music partners with a Shorts agreement. The 'YouTube Shorts monetization policies' page still says Shorts over one minute with claimed content are blocked and not eligible for monetization.

We checked all three pages on September 22, 2026, two days before that date. The rule only concerns Shorts with an active claim. If your clip might carry claimed content, read the three pages again before you post a Short longer than a minute.

What length works for a clip cut from a long video

YouTube gives no ideal length. Its help pages give the three-minute cap, and its April 2025 getting-started guide only says to get your message across quickly and to capture attention in the first few seconds. The only official word we found on how longer Shorts are distributed is an October 2024 blog post saying YouTube would work to improve recommendations for longer Shorts. The advice below is our editorial judgment, not a YouTube rule.

For a talk, podcast, course or webinar, let the idea set the length. A clip should open where a thought starts and close when the speaker finishes it. Cutting at a round number often ends mid-sentence. For one clear point, a target of 30 to 60 seconds is a reasonable place to start.

Stay under one minute when the source might carry claimed content, such as music playing in the room, or when you would rather not rely on the September 2026 Content ID change. Use the room up to three minutes for a full answer from a Q&A or a worked example that loses its point when trimmed.

Format checks before you upload

Length is one check. YouTube's own pages add a few more for vertical clips.

  • Aspect ratio: YouTube's getting-started guide says to film in 9:16 vertical.
  • Resolution: YouTube Help says Shorts can be uploaded at a maximum resolution of 1080p. In 9:16, that is a 1080 x 1920 frame.
  • No black bars: YouTube advises against adding black bars or padding to the sides of a vertical video. On computer browsers, YouTube may add its own padding around 9:16 videos.
  • Title: in the app's Shorts upload flow, a title can be at most 100 characters.
  • Thumbnail: YouTube recommends 9:16 for Shorts thumbnails and suggests 2160 x 3840, with a minimum height of 640 px. YouTube Help says custom Shorts thumbnails are added in YouTube Studio on a computer and need a verified account. A July 2026 YouTube Blog post says YouTube Partner Program creators can upload them first, with more creators to follow.
  • Batch upload: in YouTube Studio on a computer, you can select up to 15 short videos at a time, each up to 3 minutes and square or vertical.

Pointing the clip back to the full video

A clip from a long video is also a way into that video. With advanced feature access, a Short can carry a 'Related Video' link in the Shorts player that points to another public or unlisted video on your channel, such as the full talk or episode.

YouTube's own 'Edit into a Short' tool is described two ways. One help page says it lets you select up to 60 seconds of an already uploaded public long video, and the resulting Short links back to the original. Another says a video over three minutes can be trimmed to three minutes or less with the same button at upload. Check what your app offers before you plan around either number.

On monetization, views can be ineligible on 'non-original' Shorts, such as unedited clips of others' movies or shows, reuploads of other creators' content, or compilations with nothing original added. Clipping your own long video is not among the examples YouTube lists.

With shortshort

shortshort cuts clips from a long video file you own: MP4, MOV or WebM, up to 3 hours and 2 GB. You pick a target from 15 to 90 seconds. Each clip opens and closes on a complete sentence, so it may run up to 25% shorter or longer than the target. The longest export is 112.5 seconds, under YouTube's three-minute cap. As selected, a 45-second target tops out at 56.25 seconds, under one minute, and a 60-second target can reach 75. If you widen the bounds or add clips in the editor, a short can run up to 112.5 seconds, whatever the target. Can a YouTube Short be longer than one minute?
