How many shorts can you get from a one-hour video?
How many vertical shorts to cut from a one-hour talk, podcast or course, how long each one should run, and what YouTube, TikTok and Instagram allow.
The short answer
Even the Studio maximum, 20 shorts of 90 seconds, fits in one hour without reusing footage, so the hour is not the limit: the number of distinct, complete ideas is. In shortshort you choose up to 3 shorts on Free, 5 on Starter, 10 on Creator or 20 on Studio, and one target from 15 to 90 seconds. As of September 2026, YouTube Shorts allow up to three minutes.

What fits in one hour
On a one-hour source, length does not limit you. A one-hour source is 3,600 seconds, and the file must be MP4, MOV or WebM of 2 GB or less. Shorts generated in one run never share footage, so shortshort's length check refuses a request for several shorts when count × (target × 0.75) is longer than the source. On a one-hour video, every combination the selector offers passes that test.
The largest request, 20 shorts of 90 seconds on Studio, needs at least 1,350 seconds of distinct footage (22.5 minutes). Its output can reach at most 2,250 seconds (37.5 minutes). Even at that maximum, at most 62.5% of the hour ends up in shorts.
So the useful question is not how many shorts the hour can hold. It is how many distinct, complete ideas it contains.
How to choose the number of shorts
Count ideas, not minutes. Skim the recording and list each moment where a point is made and finished: a question fully answered, a story with its ending, a claim with its example. That list is your number. This is editorial judgement, not a statistic: a dense interview may hold more self-contained answers than a lecture that builds one argument across its slides.
The number you pick is exact, not a maximum. The AI must return exactly that many shorts, and nothing drops a weak candidate to meet a quality bar. If the hour holds six strong moments and you ask for ten, you still get ten. The AI analyses the whole source in one pass and is told to pick the most useful ideas rather than cut at regular intervals. The shorts come back in the order they appear in the video.
Your plan sets a ceiling per video: 3 on Free, 5 on Starter, 10 on Creator and 20 on Studio. The selector lists 1 to 20, starts at 1, and disables counts above your plan with a "plan" label. The server enforces the same ceiling.
How to choose the length
You pick one target duration from 15 to 90 seconds, in 5-second steps: 16 options, 30 seconds by default. Every short in a run shares that target. Before you generate, the studio sums it up, for example "10 × 30 s · 5:00 targeted · distinct moments", followed by the credit estimate once the video is read.
The target is not a hard cut. Each short may run 25% shorter or longer so it can finish a complete sentence and its idea, then stop before the next sentence. A short can also stitch several non-overlapping excerpts: up to 5 for a 30-second target, up to 8 for 60 seconds.
Pick the length from the moments on your list. A 15-second target suits one sharp point. A 60 or 90-second target leaves room for a claim and its example, or a story and its ending. One run uses one target, so choose the length that fits most of the moments you counted.

What YouTube, TikTok and Instagram allow
The official help pages checked on September 22, 2026 give maximums, not an ideal length, so this guide does not name one. Every limit below is longer than the longest short shortshort can produce, 112.5 seconds.
On YouTube the shape matters as much as the length: YouTube says a wider ratio such as 16:9 keeps a video out of Shorts, as a long-form video. shortshort exports 9:16 only.

What one hour costs
shortshort charges for the source, not the output: 1 credit = 1 minute of source video. A one-hour video costs 60 credits whether you ask for 1 short or the 20 that Studio allows. The credits are reserved on the server before the work starts, and released if queueing fails. Each generation reserves its own credits, so ask for the number you want in one run.
Minutes are rounded up. A new account gets 60 free credits with no card, which covers a file of exactly 60 minutes or less. Even a fraction of a second more costs 61 credits, one more than the welcome credits. Free exports are watermarked and published to the public community gallery. Credits never expire and roll over.

After the run: exporting and uploading a batch
Each short is reframed to 9:16 by tracking the face on screen, with slides and wide shots kept full-frame, and exported as its own MP4 at 1080 × 1920, 30 fps. Bounds, clip choice, title and captions stay editable after generation, and an edited short can be rendered again.
On Creator and Studio, shorts render on shortshort's servers, so you can close the tab. "Download all" builds one ZIP: a server-rendered short with captions on comes in twice, with and without them, and a short rendered in the browser comes in its exported version only.
Plan the upload for a large batch. On a computer, YouTube lets you select up to 15 Shorts at once, and each one needs its details completed before publishing. Twenty shorts from one hour, the Studio maximum, means at least two batches. Since the shorts come back in source order, you already have a sequence to schedule.

Can two shorts from the same video reuse the same moment?
Not within one run. shortshort rejects any overlap between the shorts of a single generation, even a single frame, and each short needs a distinct title. Two separate runs on the same video are not checked against each other.
Why is my 30-second short longer than 30 seconds?
In shortshort the target is not exact. Each short may run 25% shorter or longer to finish a complete sentence, so a 30-second target gives a short of 22.5 to 37.5 seconds.
What happens if I ask for more shorts than my plan allows?
The shortshort studio disables counts above your plan's ceiling, and the server refuses such a request with a message asking you to choose fewer or move to a larger plan. The ceilings are 3 shorts per video on Free, 5 on Starter, 10 on Creator and 20 on Studio.
