Where should you cut a short clip out of a long talk?
Cut clips from talks, podcasts and courses on complete sentences, not on a timer: where to start, where to end, and how much length to allow for the thought.
The short answer
Cut on complete sentences, not on a timer. Start on the first word of a specific idea or question, skip the greetings, and end just after the sentence that closes that idea, before the next one begins. Let the length drift around your target instead of stopping mid-thought. YouTube's blog (April 2025) says Shorts cut from long videos should be enjoyable on their own.

Why a timer is the wrong place to cut
A timer cut stops at a fixed length, say 30 seconds, wherever the speaker happens to be. In a talk, podcast or course, that point can fall in the middle of a sentence, or even in the middle of a word. The clip then ends on half a thought.
YouTube's official blog puts it simply: "While Shorts can promote your long-form videos, they should also be enjoyable on their own." In our view, a clip that stops before its point lands is hard to enjoy on its own.
One caveat: we found no official platform page that measures whether mid-sentence endings perform worse. The case for sentence cuts rests on that standalone advice, not on engagement numbers.
Where to start the clip
Start on the first word of a sentence that carries a specific idea or a question. Leave out greetings, introductions, agenda announcements and generic thanks. They make sense inside the full talk, not on their own.
YouTube's blog advises getting to the point quickly. It suggests three kinds of opening: a question, a surprising fact, or a visually striking moment. For tutorials, it suggests pulling out single, actionable steps that can stand alone as a Short.
You may see TikTok timings quoted, such as a hook in the first 6 seconds and the proposition in the first 3. They come from TikTok's help center for advertisers and are about performance ads, not regular posts.
Where to end the clip
End just after the sentence that finishes the idea, and before the next sentence starts. Finishing the sentence is not always enough. If the speaker then opens a new example or story, stop before it rather than a few words into it.
Listen to what follows your chosen end before you commit. The next sentence may add a qualification that changes the meaning. Keep the speaker's meaning and qualifications intact.
Never cut inside a word. Leave a short breath after the last word and stop before the next one begins. shortshort, for example, places a confirmed ending up to 120 ms after the last word, never into the next one.
Let the length flex around a target
Choose a target length, then allow the clip to run a little shorter or longer so it can land on a sentence. shortshort uses a 25% margin either way: a 15-second target allows 11.25 to 18.75 seconds, a 30-second target 22.5 to 37.5 seconds, and a 90-second target 67.5 to 112.5 seconds.
The illustration on shortshort's sentence-clips page shows the difference. With the same passage and a 30-second target, the timer cut stops in the middle of a sentence. The sentence cut runs on to the full stop at 37 seconds, still inside the margin.
The extra seconds do not push a clip past what the platforms accept. The table lists what each official help page said when we checked it, as of September 2026.

Cutting several clips from one recording
Do not split a long recording at regular intervals. That is a timer cut applied to the whole talk. Pick passages that each hold a complete idea and do not overlap, so the same footage does not appear in two clips. Leave room at sentence boundaries between neighbouring clips.
A single clip can also join a few excerpts that do not overlap. Keep each excerpt a complete sentence, and favour continuity over many tiny cuts that remove every pause.
Check the arithmetic first: the number of clips times the shortest allowed length has to fit in the source. Ten clips with a 30-second target and a 25% margin need at least 225 seconds of recording.
How to check a cut
Watch the last seconds of every clip before you export it. That is where a bad cut shows: a clipped last word, or the first syllable of the next sentence.
Keep captions word for word, in the language that was spoken. YouTube's blog says Shorts are often watched without sound, so captions are essential. A sentence that is complete in the audio should also be complete on screen.
After posting, check the opening with the 'How many chose to view' metric in YouTube Studio. It shows how often viewers watched your Short instead of swiping it away. Do not judge a clip on its public view count. Since August 24, 2026, YouTube counts a view the moment a video starts to play, in every format including Shorts. That number says nothing about whether viewers stayed to the end.
With shortshort
In shortshort you pick a target of 15 to 90 seconds, and each short may run 25% shorter or longer (112.5 seconds at most) to end on a sentence. A second pass transcribes the short again with Whisper and moves the cut onto a confirmed '.', '!' or '?', or warns you to check it. Only the end is verified: the start is the AI's proposal.

What happens if shortshort cannot confirm a sentence ending?
It keeps the AI's original end and shows a warning asking you to check the final seconds. Only '.', '!' and '?' count as sentence ends, and an ellipsis or an abbreviation such as 'Dr.' does not, so transcripts that end sentences with other marks will get this warning.
Can I move a cut by hand in shortshort?
Yes. In the studio each excerpt has Start and End fields in seconds, and the values you type are applied as typed, to the nearest frame at 30 fps. They are not snapped to a sentence or a word, so a manual cut can land mid-sentence.
