How long can an Instagram Reel be, and what size should it be?
Instagram Reels can run 20 minutes, but past 3 minutes they aren't recommended to non-followers. Ratio, fps, resolution, cover, file size: checked Sept 2026.
The short answer
An Instagram Reel can be up to 20 minutes long, according to the Instagram Help Center as of September 2026, but reels over 3 minutes won't be recommended to people who don't follow you. Use 9:16 vertical (Instagram accepts 1.91:1 to 9:16), at least 30 fps and at least 720 pixels. The Help Center sets no file-size limit; Meta's developer docs cap API-published reels at 300 MB.

How long can a reel be? 20 minutes, with a 3-minute line
As of 22 September 2026, the Instagram Help Center says a reel can run up to 20 minutes, recorded as one clip or several. The FAQ on the Reels page of about.instagram.com says the same.
Both pages add a catch: reels over 3 minutes won't be recommended to new audiences, meaning people who don't follow you. You can still post a longer reel, and your followers can still see it. For a clip meant to reach new viewers, 3 minutes is the number that matters.
Meta's own pages don't agree yet. The same Help Center article's meta description and the hero text on about.instagram.com still say 3 minutes. The Meta Ads Guide says Reels ads, "similar to organic Reels", go up to 15 minutes, and Meta's developer docs cap reels published through the Instagram API at 15 minutes. We follow the Help Center article body. None of the pages we checked says when the limit changed.

|---|---|---|
| Instagram Help Center, Record a reel on Instagram | Article body | Up to 20 minutes; reels over 3 minutes won't be recommended to new audiences |
| Instagram Help Center, Record a reel on Instagram | Meta description | Up to 3 minutes |

Which aspect ratio should a reel be?
Instagram accepts any aspect ratio from 1.91:1 (landscape) to 9:16 (vertical). 9:16 is the tallest it takes. Meta's Business Help Center recommends 9:16 for Reels placements because most people hold their phones vertically, and Instagram lists being filmed vertically among the traits of reels it recommends.
Talks, podcasts, courses and webinars are often recorded in landscape. A 16:9 file sits inside Instagram's accepted range, so it will upload, but it won't be 9:16. Padding it with bars to reach 9:16 adds borders, and Instagram lists borders among the things that make a reel show up less often. Cropping a vertical frame around the speaker avoids both problems.
Resolution, frame rate, file size and codecs
For organic reels, the Instagram Help Center gives minimums only: a frame rate of at least 30 fps and a resolution of at least 720 pixels. It names no recommended or maximum resolution and no maximum file size. Meta's developer docs do set limits for reels published through the Instagram API: 300 MB, 15 minutes, 1920 pixels wide at most and 23 to 60 fps. We found no file-size limit for reels uploaded in the Instagram app.
The same page lists advanced requirements: progressive scan (no interlacing), High profile, 2 consecutive B frames, a closed GOP of half the frame rate, CABAC and 4:2:0 chroma subsampling. Audio should be stereo, or stereo + 5.1, at 48 or 96 kHz. The setting Menu > Media quality > Upload at highest quality makes Instagram always upload reels at the highest quality, though uploads may take longer.
Two bigger numbers, 1440 x 2560 px and a 4 GB maximum, come from Meta's Ads Guide for Reels ads. They describe ads, not organic reels.
| Spec | Organic reel (Instagram Help Center) | Reels ad (Meta Ads Guide) |
|---|---|---|
| Length | Up to 20 minutes; over 3 minutes not recommended to new audiences | 0 seconds to 15 minutes |
| Aspect ratio | 1.91:1 to 9:16 | 9:16 recommended |
| Resolution | At least 720 px; no recommended or maximum figure | 1440 x 2560 px recommended; minimum width 250 px (under 30 s) or 500 px (30 s or longer) |
| Frame rate | At least 30 fps | Fixed frame rate |
| File size | No maximum stated | 4 GB maximum |
| Video | Progressive scan, High profile, 2 consecutive B frames, closed GOP of half the frame rate, CABAC, 4:2:0 | MP4 or MOV, H.264, square pixels, progressive scan |
| Audio | Stereo, or stereo + 5.1, at 48 or 96 kHz | Stereo AAC at 128 kbps or more |
Cover image, on-screen text and safe zones
Instagram recommends a cover photo of 420 x 654 px (a 1:1.55 ratio), as a png or jpg. Choose it before you post: once a reel is uploaded, its cover can't be edited.
We found no safe zone for organic reels on Instagram's pages. The closest official reference is Meta's guidance for Reels ads: keep at least 14% of the top, 35% of the bottom and 6% of each side free of text, logos and key elements, so the profile icon or call-to-action doesn't cover them. On a 1080 x 1920 frame that is about 269 px at the top, 672 px at the bottom and 65 px per side.
Meta also tells advertisers that on screens taller than 9:16 it may zoom the video to fill the screen, cropping what sits outside the safe zone, or add a black background. For any reel, keep text in support of the picture: Instagram shows reels that are mostly covered by text less often.
What makes Instagram show a reel less often
Instagram's Help Center lists reels it shows less often: those with borders, logos or watermarks; muted, blurry or low-resolution reels; reels that aren't original videos; and reels mostly covered by text. Reels from accounts you follow are not made less visible. On the other side, it lists reels filmed vertically, and reels using music from the Instagram library or original audio made with the Reels audio tool.
Content is original when the account that posts it created it, and the Help Center's first example is a reel you recorded of yourself. Clips from your own talk or podcast, posted from your own account, fit that definition. Reposting someone else's footage is different: same-language subtitles, borders, logos, watermarks and stitching clips together don't count as material edits. Such content is allowed on Instagram but may not be eligible for recommendation.
Professional accounts can check in Account Status whether their content may be recommended to non-followers, and content that isn't eligible can still show up for followers. Instagram's ranking post of May 31, 2023 names resharing, watching all the way through, liking and going to the audio page as the most important predictions for Reels. A clip cut from a long recording should make sense on its own, from first word to last.
How a shortshort export lines up with these specs
shortshort cuts one long recording into vertical clips and exports each as an MP4 file. It does not post to Instagram: you download the file and upload it in the Instagram app yourself. The table compares the export with the Instagram figures above.
Faces are followed in a 9:16 crop with a zoom between x1.0 and x1.6. Slides, charts and wide shots are shown whole instead: the image is scaled to fit within 1080 px wide and 1,250 px tall and laid over a blurred, darkened copy of the same video, with no black bars. Instagram's pages don't say whether a blurred fill counts as a border.
| Instagram guidance | shortshort export |
|---|---|
| Aspect ratio from 1.91:1 to 9:16 | 9:16 only, 1080 x 1920. No 4:5, square or landscape |
| At least 30 fps and 720 px | 30 fps at 1080 x 1920. Nothing higher |
| Up to 20 minutes; over 3 minutes not recommended to new audiences | Targets of 15 to 90 s in 5 s steps; finished clips up to 112.5 s |
| Help Center: no file-size limit stated. API-published reels: 300 MB maximum | H.264, video bitrate capped at 8 Mbps: a 112.5 s clip's video stream stays at or under 88 MB |
| Reels with watermarks shown less often | Free plan: a 'shortshort.io' pill in the bottom-right corner. Paid plans: no watermark |
| Recommended traits include library music or original audio made with the Reels audio tool | No music or trending audio: the clip keeps the source video's sound |
| No organic safe zone found; ad guidance keeps the bottom 35% clear | Captions sit 330 px above the bottom edge, about 17% up, inside that bottom 35%. They can be switched off |
With shortshort
shortshort takes one long recording you own (MP4, MOV or WebM, up to 3 hours and 2 GB) and exports vertical MP4 clips (H.264) at 1080 x 1920 and 30 fps: 9:16, at Instagram's 30 fps minimum and above its 720 px one. You set a target from 15 to 90 seconds; a clip may run up to 25% shorter or longer to end on a complete sentence, so no clip exceeds 112.5 seconds. Limits: 9:16 is the only format, no music is added, and you post to Instagram yourself. Free exports carry a shortshort.io watermark, and Instagram says it shows watermarked reels less often. Starter (12 EUR a month) removes it.
Questions people ask
Can an Instagram Reel be longer than 3 minutes?
Yes. As of September 2026, the Instagram Help Center says a reel can run up to 20 minutes, made of one clip or several. Reels over 3 minutes won't be recommended to people who don't follow you, but your followers can still see them.
What resolution should an Instagram Reel be?
The Instagram Help Center gives only minimums for organic reels: at least 720 pixels and at least 30 fps, with no recommended or maximum resolution. The 1440 x 2560 px figure comes from Meta's specs for Reels ads.
Is there a file size limit for Instagram Reels?
The Instagram Help Center, checked in September 2026, states no maximum file size for reels uploaded in the app. Meta's developer docs cap reels published through the Instagram API at 300 MB. The 4 GB maximum in Meta's Ads Guide applies to Reels ads.
Can I change an Instagram Reel's cover after posting?
No. Instagram says a reel's cover photo can't be edited after upload. The recommended cover size is 420 x 654 px (1:1.55), as a png or jpg.
Do subtitles make a reposted clip original on Instagram?
No. Instagram lists same-language subtitle transcripts among edits that don't make reposted content original, along with borders, logos and watermarks. Content is original when the account posting it created it, such as a reel you recorded of yourself.
