shortshort vs Ssemble: the short answer

shortshort turns one video of up to 3 hours into 9:16 shorts that end where the sentence ends, framed on the face on screen with automatic emphasis zooms, captioned word by word, for €0.05 per minute of source video. 60 minutes are free, no card.

Ssemble reassembles a long video into vertical shorts, with captions and posting. It may fit better for link import, translation or dubbing, virality score; the table below says where, with the source.

Why shortshort

Four things the product does by design; the table below checks the rest, both ways.

Priced by the minute, not by the short

€0.05 per minute on Starter, whatever the number of shorts. 60 minutes are free at sign-up, no card.

Cuts that finish the sentence

The AI reads the whole transcript and keeps complete, quotable passages: a short opens and closes on a sentence, never mid-thought.

Framing that follows the face, with motion

The 9:16 crop tracks the face on screen and adds emphasis zooms between x1.0 and x1.6; slides and wide shots stay whole. Framing is automatic; cuts, title and captions stay editable.

One page, nothing to learn

Drop the file, choose how many shorts and how long, check the proposals, export the MP4s. No timeline, no template to configure.

18 criteria, side by side

One line per criterion, the same shape on both sides. The Ssemble column is derived from Ssemble's own site: the number after a cell points to the source, and the exact wording is under the table.

Reading note. Ssemble is a browser editor with a clipping mode; the free plan is checked on their pricing page.

The exact wording of each Ssemble cell, as read on their site
Longest video
For an uploaded file: "Length: 1 to 30 minutes" (and "Resolution: max 1080P"). For what one credit processes: "Currently, the maximum range you can select between start and end times is 20 minutes" (Custom Options), and the pricing FAQ says "For each input video, you can select up to a 20-minute segment to create short-form content. For example, if you have a 60-minute original video, you can select a maximum 10-minute segment" - the 10-minute example contradicts its own 20-minute rule. Longer sources pasted as links have no stated ceiling: with "Clip Entire Video" on, Ssemble "automatically divides your whole video into 20-minute segments and processes each segment as its own project", billed one credit per segment ("a 5-hour video is 15 segments = 15 credits"). One narrower cap: choosing ORIGINAL as the clip length (subtitles only, no clipping) limits "the input video length is maximum 5 minutes". Marketing pages give shorter, inconsistent figures - "up to 20 minutes" on /tools/ai-video-editor and /tools/short-video-maker, and "Each Twitch stream up to 4 hours uses 1 credit" on /tools/twitch-clipping-tool. [1]
Largest file
"Size: up to 1 GB" for a file uploaded directly (stated as "Size: max 1GB" on the How to Submit Your Video page). [2]
How the video gets in
"Ssemble can clip from YouTube, Vimeo, Kick, and Twitch links - or from your own video files." Uploaded files: "Formats: mov, mp4, webm · Size: max 1GB · Length: max 30 minutes · Resolution: max 1080P". Restrictions on their own domain: "YouTube: long-form videos are supported (Shorts are not)"; "Live streams on YouTube, Kick, and Twitch can be clipped once the broadcast has ended and the recording is available"; Twitch and Kick accept VODs only, not the short /clip/ links, and subscriber-only VODs cannot be imported; Vimeo public and unlisted links work, but not password-protected, private, showcase, channel or event pages. The help centre also narrows content type: "Ssemble Shorts Maker works only for TALKING videos", with "Video without face", "Videos with noise", "Gaming", "Music Videos" and "Live Videos" listed as bad video types. The API is narrower still - "either a YouTube URL (url) or a direct video file URL (fileUrl) - for example, an S3, Wasabi, GCS, or Azure Blob link" - with no Vimeo, Kick or Twitch. Their marketing FAQ claims wider format support: "Ssemble supports all major video formats (MP4, MOV, AVI, etc.)" on /tools/short-video-maker, against the help centre's three. [2]
Crop follows the speaker
Yes, automatic face tracking, with two user-selectable modes. The homepage lists "Face Tracking" - "AI detects faces in your video and keeps them centered in vertical formats" - and /tools/ai-clipping says "AI keeps speakers centered in vertical clips for mobile." The help centre names the underlying behaviour in the layout picker: "Auto: Recognize and focus on the face of the person speaking. In scenes where the speaker's face is unrecognizable, Fit is applied", and you can override it by choosing Fill, Fit or 1:1 instead. The homepage also sells "Sports Video Mode": "Sports Mode tracks the ball and the action instead of faces", and "Just select Sports mode when creating your Shorts" - so reframing behaviour is user-selectable, though Sports Mode appears nowhere in the help centre or API docs. What is not described anywhere is a control for choosing which of several speakers to follow, or manual keyframe reframing. The help centre warns the product is built for faces at all: "Ssemble Shorts Maker works only for TALKING videos", with "Video without face" listed as a bad video type. [3]
Automatic captions
Automatic captions are a core feature ("Auto Captioning" on the homepage) and are burned in by default: "By default, Ssemble burns captions into every clip it makes." They can be switched off for a new project, for an existing clip (Captions tab, settings icon, then "Save & Recompile"), or for a whole Channel Automation - and turning them off does not reduce the credit cost, because "Ssemble still transcribes your video". Styling and editing are extensive: "Choose Caption Template" with "New caption templates are added continuously", font size, position and colour, a Words Per Caption control, "Highlight Caption Effect", Remove Punctuation, hide/show all or individual captions, adjust a caption's Start Time or End Time, and edit an individual word. The API names nine templates - Hormozi 1, Hormozi 2, Karaoke, Ali, Mr Beast, Simple, Iman, Iman 2 and Box - and says "Each template controls the style, font, color, and animation of your captions", defaulting to Karaoke (their /mcp page describes the same endpoint as "Karaoke, Bold, Minimal, etc.", naming two templates that do not exist). On language count their pages give three different answers - "over 30 languages" (homepage FAQ), "Perfect captions in 100+ languages with word-level timing" (/tools/ai-clipping), "28 languages supported" (End Screen article) - but the only enumerated list, on How to Submit Your Video, contains 37 video languages and includes no Chinese, Japanese, Korean or Arabic, so the 100+ claim is not supportable from their own documentation. [4]
Aspect ratios
Output is vertical. The documented control is a clip layout choice that decides how horizontal footage sits inside a portrait canvas, not an output ratio picker: "Auto: Recognize and focus on the face of the person speaking"; "Fill: Fill horizontal footage into a vertical format"; "Fit: Fits the horizontal footage so that it is all visible in portrait format" with letterboxing; "1:1: Displays landscape footage so that it appears square in portrait." A clip background colour (blurred by default) fills the gaps. The API exposes the same four: "Choose video layout - auto, fill, fit, or square framing for different platforms." Marketing pages claim more than the product documents: /tools/video-repurposing-tool says "AI crops to 9:16 (vertical), 16:9 (landscape), 1:1 (square) automatically", /tools/video-cropper advertises "presets for 1:1 (Instagram), 9:16 (TikTok), 16:9 (YouTube), 4:5 (Facebook), and custom ratios", and /tools/youtube-clips-maker claims "Ssemble creates both vertical clips ... and horizontal clips for regular YouTube posts. You choose the format when exporting." Neither the help centre nor the API corroborates a horizontal or 4:5 export. [3]
Export
1080p, fixed. "Even if the original video is 4k or higher, the resolution/quality of the output clip that Ssemble extracts is set to 1080p. This is because 1080p is the maximum quality supported by TikTok, Instargam Reels, and YouTube Shorts." The same page caps uploaded source files at "Resolution: max 1080P". No frame rate, bitrate or codec is stated anywhere on their site, help centre or API docs. [5]
Manual editor
Yes, despite marketing copy to the contrary. "You can enter the editor by pressing the Edit button below the clip", and "The editor is organized into two phases: Cut and Edit. On the Cut page, you have a text editor and a timeline editor. You can cut clips in both areas." You can select a word to set the clip's start or end, press X to delete the portion of video for that word, "drag to select multiple words and delete multiple words at once", restore removed words, "drag the left or right trimming handles to adjust the start and end points of the video clips", zoom the timeline in and out, and "All changes you make on the cut page can be undone and redone." Captions, layout, background colour, B-roll, effects, hooks and music are all editable on the Edit side, and changes to an existing clip are re-rendered with "Save & Recompile". Their own /tools/ai-video-editor page nonetheless headlines "No Timeline. AI Does It For You" and lists "No timeline editing" as a benefit three times, while the pricing FAQ says "The AI does 90% of the work through AI Clipping. You just need to make minor adjustments (10% of the work)". [6]
Brand presets
Templates yes, a brand kit not stated. Clip styling comes from their caption/visual templates: Channel Automation has a "Template Selection" step that "Controls subtitle and visual style", and every input source gets the "same options, same templates". Some of your own assets can be used - the help centre lists "image and text overlays" among clip elements, you can upload your own video files as B-roll, and the End screen card accepts "your own image or GIF to replace the default animated bell card" plus custom text and your @handle. Separately, "AI Templates" are a different product inside Ssemble - "pre-designed, AI-driven video creation workflows" combining "AI script writing, voice synthesis, image generation, and video editing" - sold as helping you "Maintain consistent branding across multiple videos", in Business and TIKTOK CRP categories. Nowhere does their site describe a saved brand kit of your own logo, fonts and colours applied automatically to clips. (The one "[Overlay] tool" instruction for placing a sponsor logo, in their monetization guide, appears in a checklist that tells you to install CapCut, so it is not a statement about Ssemble's own editor.) [7]
Edit export
No editing-timeline export is stated. Clips leave as video or subtitles only: from the Shorts List Page you "click download button to export the video" and "can then download an MP4 file of the short-form clip"; in the editor the More menu has a "Download SRT button. Click it to download the subtitles as an SRT file" and a "Copy Subtitles" button, both of which keep working even when captions are switched off. I grepped all 49 help articles, the API docs and every tools and comparison page for Premiere, DaVinci, Final Cut, XML and EDL and found no match; the API returns finished clip URLs with titles, viral scores and metadata, not an edit decision list. [8]
Translation or dubbing
Translated captions yes, dubbing no. The homepage feature is "Caption Translation", described as "Translate captions to different languages while keeping the original audio", with image alt text "Ssemble Caption Translation , translate captions to 30+ languages while keeping original audio"; the comparison pages label it "Caption Translation / 30+ languages". The help centre workflow: "click Video Language and choose the right language. Select Caption Translation to choose the language for translation", and the API takes separate language and captionLanguage fields. The separate "Multi Language Audio" feature is not Ssemble dubbing anything: "If the original YouTube video has multiple audio tracks, you can select your preferred language track to use in your Shorts", illustrated as "Original English audio replaced with the Hindi dubbed track from YouTube". The words dubbing, voice cloning and voiceover appear nowhere on their site, help centre or API docs as a clipping capability (AI voice synthesis exists only inside the separate AI Templates product). [9]
Virality score
Yes, a 0 to 100 score. "Each clip gets a score from 0–100", with clips "Above threshold → auto-posted" and "Below threshold → saved for review", and recommended thresholds "30–40: More content, less filtering", "50–60: Balanced (best starting point)", "70–80: High quality, fewer posts", "85+: Only top clips". The What is Channel Automation article repeats it: "Every clip is scored (0–100) based on its viral potential." The homepage says "Our AI scores viral moments and cuts Shorts-ready clips", and the API returns a viral_score field per clip ("video URLs, AI-generated titles, viral scores, and metadata"). The threshold itself is a Channel Automation setting; alongside it you set Clip Duration (30/60/90s), Clips Per Video (1-2, 3-5, 6-10) and Check Frequency (6h/12h/24h/weekly). [7]
B-roll, music, titles
Yes. The advanced editing article documents "How to Add B-roll" - on the Captions tab you click the B-roll icon on a caption or "Search B-roll" on a word, search footage by those words, and set a duration; "You can also search by movie title, actor, or scene to use movie footage as a video roll", and "You can also upload your own video files to use as non-roll footage." Alongside it: "How to Add Background Music", "How to Add Sound Effect", "How to Add Transition Effect", "How to Add Video Effects", "How to Add Zoom Effect" (Zoom in / Zoom In From Here / Zoom out from here), "How to Add or Change Hook Title" and "How to Add or Change CTA", plus two gaming overlays - "Game Video", where "game footage like GTA will be randomly added to the bottom of the generated clip", and "Meme Hook", where "an attention-grabbing Meme video is automatically attached at the beginning of each generated video clip". There is also an "End Screen Outro (Please Subscribe Card)", off by default, 1-3 seconds. The API and MCP server can "Browse assets - list available music tracks, game videos, and meme hooks" (list_music, list_game_videos, list_meme_hooks). [3]
Publishes to social
Yes. "Ssemble's Schedule and Post features allow you to automatically post your clips across TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram. You can schedule multiple clips to be posted over several days." Titles, descriptions and hashtags are auto-populated and editable; posts can go out immediately ("Post now") or be scheduled, and scheduled posts can be edited or cancelled from a calendar. "Channel Automation" goes further - it "monitors a YouTube channel you choose and automatically clips every new upload into viral-ready shorts. Qualifying clips (above your virality threshold) are auto-posted to your connected TikTok, YouTube Shorts, and Instagram Reels accounts." Two caps the pricing page does not show: Ssemble enforces its own posting throttle - "a limit of 3 uploads per minute and 10 uploads per day", with a recommendation of "no more than once per minute and five times per day per account" - and Channel Automation is limited to 1 channel on Pro, 3 on Expert, 10 on Business, unlimited on Custom. Connected accounts are capped separately by plan: 1 on Pro, 3 on Expert, unlimited on Business and Custom. Instagram requires a Business or Creator account, since "A Personal Instagram account does not support API access." [10]
Team seats
Not stated on their site.
API
Yes, and it is on the cheapest paid plan: the Pro tier lists "Access to APIs". The reference at ssemble.com/docs documents a REST API at base URL https://aiclipping.ssemble.com/api/v1, authenticated with an X-API-Key header, with nine endpoints: POST /shorts/create (from a YouTube url or a direct fileUrl), GET /shorts/:id/status, GET /shorts/:id, GET /shorts, DELETE /shorts/:id, GET /templates, GET /music, GET /game-videos, GET /meme-hooks. You can "Control clip length from under 30 seconds to under 10 minutes" and "Choose video layout - auto, fill, fit, or square framing", with "Webhook callbacks on completion". Requirements: "An active Ssemble subscription with available credits", and "Each short creation consumes 1 credit". Rate limits are published: 500 requests/minute on most endpoints, plus account-level caps of "100 requests/hour and 1,000 requests/day" by default, "up to 2,000/hour and 20,000/day" on higher tiers. They also publish an MCP server: "Connect Ssemble AI Clipping to Claude, Cursor, Windsurf, VS Code - or automate with n8n, Zapier, and Make via webhooks", installed with "npx @ssemble/mcp-server" or the hosted Streamable HTTP endpoint https://mcp.ssemble.com/mcp, "MIT licensed, published on npm", exposing nine tools (create_short, get_status, get_shorts, list_requests, delete_request, list_templates, list_music, list_game_videos, list_meme_hooks). [11]
Free plan
No. Their help centre states in full: "Unfortunately, ssemble does not currently support a free trial or free tier plan." Three other pages on their own domain say the opposite - the pricing FAQ ("try our free plan to experience the platform firsthand"), /tools/clipping-software ("Yes! Sign up for free and try our clipping software with no credit card required. You'll get credits to test the full AI clipping workflow before committing to a plan", under a "Start Free Trial" button), and /tools/ai-clipping ("Try AI Clipping Free"). I treat the help centre as operative: it is the page a paying customer is sent to, and it is corroborated by the getting-started flow ("compare the plans and subscribe any one of the plans"), by Channel Automation requiring "An active Ssemble subscription (Pro, Expert, or Business)", and by the API requiring "An active Ssemble subscription with available credits". [12]
How you pay
Subscription with video credits, priced per 20 minutes of source video - not per input video. Their help centre is explicit: "1 credit covers up to 20 minutes of input video", and with "Clip Entire Video" on, "Each segment uses 1 credit, so the total cost equals the full length of your video. For example, a 1-hour video is 3 segments = 3 credits, and a 5-hour video is 15 segments = 15 credits." The homepage FAQ agrees ("1 credit covers 20 minutes of source video") and the Channel Automation article gives "10-minute video = 1 credit" and "45-minute video = 3 credits". Their marketing frames this as per-video - /pricing shows "1 Credit per video (20 minutes)" and the /alternative/* pages say "1 credit = 1 video input (not per minute)" and "Generate unlimited clips per video input" at "$0.50/video input" - which holds only for sources of 20 minutes or less. A second, unrelated credit scale applies to AI Templates: "2 credits per scene" for 21 listed templates and "10 credits per minute" for three others. Monthly and yearly billing are both offered, "Save up to 60% with yearly billing". Credits do not roll over ("video credits reset each billing cycle and don't roll over"), except Custom-plan Credit Top-Ups at "100 credits for $60", which "never expire". Yearly plans receive the full year's credits up front, valid 12 months. Failed renders refund the credit; deleting a project mid-generation does not. A "No Refund Policy" applies to all purchases. As written on their pricing page
Pro: $15/month on monthly billing (USD). Billed yearly it is $6/month, shown as "per month ($72/year)" with "Charged $72 once per year, renews annually."
"AI Clipping", "Access to APIs", "Schedule and Post", "360 Video Credits (per year)", "1 social account connection". On the monthly toggle the same tier reads "30 Video Credits (per month)". A credit is "1 Credit per video (20 minutes)" on /pricing, but their help centre is stricter: "1 credit covers up to 20 minutes of input video" and longer videos cost more. Channel Automation limit: 1 channel (help.ssemble.com/docs/automations/what-is-channel-automation).. Cheapest plan. Verified by clicking the toggle in a browser: the page loads on yearly with $15 struck through (class line-through) next to $6; flipping to monthly promotes $15 to the live price and drops the "SAVE 60%" badge. Their own comparison pages independently confirm it - /alternative/opus-pro says "PRO plan: $15/month for 30 video inputs" and prices a credit at $0.50, which is the monthly rate. The page footer says "Plans from $6/mo · Cancel anytime", the yearly-equivalent figure.
Expert: $30/month on monthly billing (USD). Billed yearly it is $12/month, shown as "per month ($144/year)" with "Charged $144 once per year, renews annually."
"Everything in Pro Plan", "720 + 120 Bonus Video Credits (per year)" (monthly toggle: "60 + 10 Bonus Video Credits (per month)"), "3 social account connections". The yearly card adds "Includes 840 video credits per year (720 base + 120 bonus)." Channel Automation limit: 3 channels.. Labelled "Most Chosen Plan".
Business: $60/month on monthly billing (USD). Billed yearly it is $24/month, shown as "per month ($288/year)" with "Charged $288 once per year, renews annually."
"Everything in Pro Plan", "1440 + 360 Bonus Video Credits (per year)" (monthly toggle: "120 + 30 Bonus Video Credits (per month)"), "Unlimited social account connections". The yearly card adds "Includes 1,800 video credits per year (1,440 base + 360 bonus)." Channel Automation limit: 10 channels.. Labelled "Best Value".
Custom: $100/month on monthly billing (USD). Billed yearly it is $40/month, shown as "per month ($480/year)" with "Charged $480 once per year, renews annually."
"Everything in Pro Plan", "2,000 + 600 Bonus Video Credits (per year)", "Unlimited social account connections". Channel Automation limit: unlimited channels. Only this tier can buy extra credits: "Credit Top-Ups are available on Custom plans only", sold as "100 credits for $60", up to "10 blocks in one purchase", card payment only, and unlike subscription credits "top-up credits never expire" (help.ssemble.com/docs/billing/buying-extra-credits-with-top-ups-custom-plans-only).. Labelled "Best for Scale". Two display faults confirmed on their own pages: (1) on the monthly toggle this tier still shows "2,000 + 600 Bonus Video Credits (per month)" while the other three correctly divide by twelve; (2) the top-up article says "you'll see the Top-Up option mentioned on the Custom plan card on our pricing page", but no top-up text appears anywhere on /pricing in the signed-out view.

The verdict

shortshort for the price per minute, the cuts and the framing; Ssemble when you need link import or translation or dubbing. Both lists come from the table.

Where shortshort comes out ahead

  • Free planYes, permanent, 60 credits, no card, no expiry; Ssemble: No free plan, Help centre says no free trial or free tier plan.
  • Longest video3 h per video, on every plan; Ssemble: 30 min upload, links longer.
  • Largest file2 GB per file, MP4, MOV, WebM; Ssemble: 1 GB per upload.
  • Cuts on complete sentencesEach short opens and closes on a sentence boundary, with a 25% margin around the target length; nothing ends mid-thought.
  • Framing that follows the face, with emphasis zoomsFace and scene tracking move the 9:16 crop; zooms between x1.0 and x1.6 add motion; slides and wide shots stay whole.
  • One page, nothing to learnDrop, choose the count and the length, check, export. No timeline or template to set up.
  • A free manual editor, no account neededBounds, caption words, caption style and title; the MP4 export works without signing in.

Where Ssemble may fit better

  • Translation or dubbing [9]Translated captions yes, dubbing no. Caption translation keeps the original audio, and the multi language audio feature only picks an audio track the source video already carries.
  • Virality score [7]Yes, a 0 to 100 viral score. The score drives channel automation, where clips above your threshold are auto posted and the rest are saved for review.
  • B-roll, music, titles [3]Yes, b-roll, music, effects, hooks and CTA. Search b-roll by word or movie title, upload your own footage, add music, sound effects, zoom, transitions, game overlays and meme hooks.
  • Publishes to social [10]Yes, to TikTok, YouTube and Instagram. Schedule or post now, plus channel automation, limited to 1 channel on Pro, 3 on Expert, 10 on Business, and 3 uploads a minute and 10 a day.
  • API [11]Yes, REST API from the cheapest plan. Nine endpoints with an API key, webhooks on completion, 1 credit per short, plus a published MCP server, and it needs an active paid subscription.

How shortshort cuts, frames and captions

Three things the table can only name. The passage, the frame and the captions below are illustrations; the community shows the real thing.

1 · The cut ends on the sentence

2 · The 9:16 crop follows the speaker

3 · Captions timed word by word

Spotlight, one of the four caption styles. Impact, Karaoke and Minimal use the same word timing.
