shortshort vs Reap: the short answer

shortshort turns one video of up to 3 hours into 9:16 shorts that end where the sentence ends, framed on the face on screen with automatic emphasis zooms, captioned word by word, for €0.05 per minute of source video. 60 minutes are free, no card.

Reap is an AI video editor that turns long videos into clips, with dubbing and social publishing alongside. It may fit better for bigger files, link import, translation or dubbing; the table below says where, with the source.

Why shortshort

Four things the product does by design; the table below checks the rest, both ways.

Priced by the minute, not by the short

€0.05 per minute on Starter, whatever the number of shorts. 60 minutes are free at sign-up, no card.

Cuts that finish the sentence

The AI reads the whole transcript and keeps complete, quotable passages: a short opens and closes on a sentence, never mid-thought.

Framing that follows the face, with motion

The 9:16 crop tracks the face on screen and adds emphasis zooms between x1.0 and x1.6; slides and wide shots stay whole. Framing is automatic; cuts, title and captions stay editable.

One page, nothing to learn

Drop the file, choose how many shorts and how long, check the proposals, export the MP4s. No timeline, no template to configure.

18 criteria, side by side

One line per criterion, the same shape on both sides. The Reap column is derived from Reap's own site: the number after a cell points to the source, and the exact wording is under the table.

Reading note. Their plan cards and their comparison table open on yearly billing; the monthly prices are read from the monthly toggle of each.

Longest video
Stated inconsistently on their own site. AI clipping in the help centre: "Supported uploads start at 1 minute and go up to 180 minutes (3 hours)." The Create Clips endpoint agrees: "Minimum: 1 minute", "Maximum: 3 hours". But the API introduction (Uploads accordion and FAQ), its FAQ JSON-LD, and the Quickstart all say "MP4 or MOV, between 2 minutes and 3 hours" , a 2-minute floor, not 1 minute. Other features are far shorter: auto reframe and AI dubbing both say "Supported uploads start at 3 seconds and go up to 10 minutes." So the headline 3 hours covers AI clipping only. [1]
Largest file
Stated four ways. AI clipping help centre: "Maximum file size: 10 GB", matched by the Create Clips endpoint ("Maximum: 10 GB"). But the upload endpoint that feeds it says "Maximum: 5 GB per file" ("Maximum size of 5 GB per file"), and the API introduction and Quickstart both say "up to 5 GB". The pricing compare table caps it by plan instead: "Up to 5 GB" on Free, "Up to 10 GB" on Creator and Studio, "Custom" on Enterprise. Auto reframe and dubbing are capped at "Maximum file size: 2 GB". [1]
How the video gets in
Upload a file or paste a link: "Upload a local video file or paste a supported video URL from platforms like YouTube, Vimeo, Twitch, or X", and "Reap supports common long-form sources including YouTube, Vimeo, Twitch, X, and local MP4 uploads." The pricing table row reads "Import directly from YouTube, Twitch, Twitter/X, and Vimeo" and gives that same list to Free, Creator and Studio, with "All + custom" on Enterprise. Clipping formats are ".mp4, .mov, .webm, .mkv"; reframe accepts ".mp4, .mov, .webm"; dubbing ".mp4" only; transcription ".mp4, .mov"; the API says "MP4 or MOV with valid video streams". Programmatic input via the REST API (presigned S3 upload URL from /get-upload-url, or a sourceUrl , which the OpenAPI schema describes for create-clips as "YouTube URL to process", and more loosely elsewhere as "Direct URL to a video file" or "Video URL to process, e.g. a YouTube link"), plus an MCP server at https://mcp.reap.video/mcp and a Zapier integration that can "Create Reap clips when a new file is added to Google Drive or Dropbox", from YouTube playlist videos, RSS feed items, Airtable records, Google Sheets rows or form responses. A CLI is advertised on the homepage, on /api ("reap clips ./video.mp4") and as a compare-table row, but no CLI page exists in their documentation index. [2]
Crop follows the speaker
Yes, on paid plans. "Speaker Detection & Auto Reframing": "AI tracks every speaker in real-time and keeps them centered in vertical format." The help centre documents Face Tracking, which "follows the speaker's face and adjusts the crop so the final clip stays focused on the person speaking", is "available in both Clipping and Auto Reframe" and "is turned on by default before clipping", with a separate page for adjusting the framing manually (manual changes take priority). The compare table ticks "Auto speaker detection & tracking" for Creator, Studio and Enterprise and dashes it for Free , correcting an earlier reading that it was on every plan , and adds "Dynamic layout switch" between "single-crop, zoom-out, and split layouts" on the same three tiers. In the API the toggle is "centerStage", which "only applies while cropping", i.e. for portrait and square output but not landscape. [3]
Automatic captions
Automatic captions are core and metered separately ("AI Captions: Up to 10 hours/month"). "50+ premium" animated presets on paid plans versus "Basic styles" on Free. "Reap supports 100+ languages for captions", with the full list published and a note that "These counts were verified against Reap's live API"; the compare table gives "100+" caption languages to every plan including Free. Paid plans add "AI Emoji insertion", "AI Keyword highlighting", "SRT / VTT export", romanized script support, custom fonts (3 on Creator, 6 on Studio, Unlimited on Enterprise) and captions "automatically formatted for TikTok, Reels, and Shorts" , all of which are dashes on Free, even though the Free plan card itself lists "AI Emoji & Keyword Highlighter". Romanized output ("Hinglish, Arabizi, Romanized Urdu, and more") is set via a script mode of "Native" or "Roman". [4]
Aspect ratios
The clipping setup offers three: "Portrait (9:16)", "Landscape (16:9)" and "Square (1:1)". The standalone auto reframe workflow offers only "Portrait (9:16)" and "Square (1:1)", even though the site nav describes it as "Auto Reframe , Resize to 9:16, 1:1, or 16:9". The pricing compare table advertises a fourth ratio on paid plans, "9:16, 16:9, 1:1, 4:5" (Free limited to "9:16", Enterprise "All"), and the API introduction also claims reframing "16:9 into 9:16, 1:1, or 4:5" , but the documented API values are exactly three: the exportOrientation enum in openapi.json is landscape, portrait, square (default landscape), with no 4:5 anywhere in the schema. [1]
Export
Export resolution choices in the clipping flow are "720", "1080", "2K" and "4K", gated by plan: "Exports in 720p (watermarked)" on Free, "Exports in 1080p (watermark-free)" on Creator, "Exports in 4K (watermark-free)" on Studio and Enterprise. The API's Plan Limits table restates it as Creator "1080p" and Studio "4K (2160p)" (Enterprise is not listed in that table). The API's exportResolution enum is 720, 1080, 1440 and 2160, defaulting to 720. No output frame rate is stated anywhere on their site; the only fps on their properties is an "fps" number field in the OpenAPI VideoFileMeta schema, which reports the source file's metadata rather than promising an output rate. [1]
Manual editor
Yes, a text-first editor. The /ai-video-editor page leads with "Edit video as fast as you can type" and "reap is the AI video editor that replaces timelines with text", then "Read the transcript. Edit the words. ... Delete a sentence and the video segment disappears. Rearrange paragraphs to reorder scenes." (The label "Edit by Text" is the homepage's wording.) In the editor you can adjust clip start and end points, trim or extend clips, remove silences, correct caption words, set caption timing and position, add emojis, highlights, text, transitions, filters, brightness, b-roll, assets, intros, outros and watermarks, and change orientation, with documented keyboard shortcuts. Their own pages conflict on whether it is a timeline editor: the compare table ticks "Multi-layer timeline editor" on all paid plans and the help centre has dedicated pages on reordering and adding timeline rows, while the marketing page insists "No tracks, no keyframes, no render queues" and "No timeline, no tracks, no learning curve". Editor use is metered as "Monthly editor transcription hours": dash on Free, "10 hrs" on Creator, "25 hrs" on Studio, "Custom" on Enterprise, and editor processing costs 2 media credits per minute. [5]
Brand presets
Yes, on paid plans. "Brand Templates", pitched as "Your video brand kit, saved once", and "Custom Brand Templates" on the Creator card. A template can save "Brand", "Caption", "Audiogram", "Text", "Intro", "Outro", "Logo", "Background", "Settings" (language, translation, script, orientation and resolution preferences) and "Fonts". Quantities from the compare table: "3 templates" on Creator, "6 templates" on Studio, "Unlimited" on Enterprise, dash on Free. The docs add that "Brand Templates created in the UI can also be used when generating clips via the API" and that "Templates apply per project. Use one template per project and tweak sections in the editor if needed." In the API they surface as presets via captionsPreset and /get-all-presets. [6]
Edit export
No NLE export is stated. The compare table lists "Export as MP4" (the one feature row ticked on every plan including Free), "Bulk export" on paid plans, and "SRT / VTT export" for captions; the transcription tool exports "TXT", "SRT", "VTT" and "CSV" plus the extracted audio. Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve appear only as tools Reap says it displaces , its editor FAQ says it "replaces hours of manual work in Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve" and the comparison table on the same page contrasts "Timeline with tracks and keyframes" against "Text-first. No timeline needed." Nothing on their site mentions XML, AAF or EDL. The nearest machine-readable edit is the API, which returns per-clip startTime and endTime with presigned clipUrl download links, titles, captions and framing metadata. [5]
Translation or dubbing
Both. "AI Dubbing in 80+ Languages" and "Subtitles in 100+ Languages", confirmed in the help centre as "100+ languages for captions", "100+ languages for translation" and "80+ languages for AI dubbing". Metered separately: "Up to 2 hours/month of dubbing and translation" on Creator, "Up to 5 hours/month" on Studio, "Custom" on Enterprise, and a dash for Free on dubbing languages, subtitle translation and dubbing hours alike. The clipping flow has a "Translate to" setting. Dubbing has much tighter inputs of its own: ".mp4" only, 3 seconds to 10 minutes, 2 GB. Voice cloning is not shipped: the compare table marks it "Coming soon" on Studio, a dash on Free and Creator, "Custom" on Enterprise , which contradicts the homepage claim that "AI clones your voice with natural intonation and pacing in 80+ languages". [4]
Virality score
Yes, on paid plans. "AI Virality Score" is a compare-table row ticked for Creator, Studio and Enterprise and dashed for Free. /clipping describes it as "Every clip gets a virality prediction score based on engagement patterns, pacing analysis, and platform trends." The API documents the field as "viralityScore", "AI-predicted virality score (0-10, higher is better)", with published bands where "9-10: Exceptional content with viral potential" down to "1-2: Lower-quality content requiring review". A natural-language "prompt" passed to /create-clips "overrides generic virality scoring when the two conflict". [7]
B-roll, music, titles
Yes, on paid plans. "AI B-Roll (stock footage insertion)" is ticked for Creator, Studio and Enterprise and dashed for Free, and the help centre documents adding "images, videos, or audio as b-roll" from the B-rolls panel in the editor. The compare table also lists "Stock media library: Unlimited" (paid only), "Intro / Outro cards", "Logo overlay", "Text overlays" and "AI Voiceover: On-device TTS with multiple voice options". "Sticker templates", described as "Shapes, visualizers, and effects you can overlay on video", are marked "Coming soon" on all three paid tiers. [4]
Publishes to social
Yes, on paid plans only , every publishing row is a dash for Free. "One-Click Publishing" plus "Social media publisher", "Content calendar scheduler", "Bulk scheduler" ("Schedule multiple clips to publish at once across platforms"), week and month calendar views, timezone-aware slots and an immediate "Publish now"; "AI-suggested posting times" is Studio and Enterprise only. Publishing requires an exported clip for immediate posts. Destinations are stated five different ways on their own site: the help centre lists YouTube, Instagram, TikTok and LinkedIn; /social-media-scheduler says "TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, and LinkedIn"; /clipping says TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn and Facebook; the API says "/publish-clip and /schedule-clips post to YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, and X"; and the pricing table gives Creator "TikTok, Reels, Shorts, LinkedIn", Studio that plus X and Facebook, Enterprise "All + custom". Multiple accounts can be connected. [8]
Team seats
Only on Studio and above. "Member seats" are 1 on Free, 1 on Creator, "Up to 3" on Studio and "Unlimited" on Enterprise, and the "Team Studio workspace", "Member roles (Admin / Member)" and "Shared projects" rows are all dashes for both Free and Creator. The Studio card phrases it as "Team collaboration features (up to 3 users)", Enterprise as "Unlimited team members". The help centre documents inviting teammates by email from the studio button or from Settings, "Manage studio", then "Invite member", and switching between studios you already belong to. [4]
API
Yes, a public REST API. "Base URL: https://public.reap.video/api/v1/automation/", "Auth: Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY", and per-endpoint rate limits of 60 reads, 30 writes and 10 project creations per minute per key, with X-RateLimit-* headers and Retry-After on 429. Webhooks (HTTPS, 200 within 5 seconds, auto-disabled after 5 failed deliveries), an OpenAPI schema at docs.reap.video/openapi.json, an agent skill (npx skills add https://docs.reap.video) and an MCP server at https://mcp.reap.video/mcp. Endpoints cover clips, captions, transcription, reframe, dubbing, project status, integrations and publishing. Concurrent projects: Creator 3, Studio 10, Enterprise custom. "API Access and integrations" is on Creator, Studio and Enterprise, and "The Automation API requires an active subscription" , REST API, CLI, MCP, webhook and API key rows are all dashes for Free, which contradicts /api's own "Free plan includes 1 hour of processing" and "Free plan available" claims. Official SDKs are "on the roadmap". [9]
Free plan
Yes. A "Free" tier at "$0 /month", labelled "Free forever", with "AI Clipping: Up to 1 hour/month (watermarked)", "AI Captions: Up to 1 hour/month (watermarked)", "Exports in 720p (watermarked)", "Basic Subtitle Styles", "AI Emoji & Keyword Highlighter" and "Projects Expire in: 7 days". In the compare table Free is capped at "Up to 5 GB" uploads, "9:16" only, 1 member seat and "Regular" processing, and only two feature rows are actually ticked for it: "Export as MP4" and "Email OTP login". Everything else is a dash, including AI Virality Score, auto speaker detection, SRT/VTT export, and the emoji/keyword rows that the Free card itself advertises. The API is not part of it: "The Automation API requires an active subscription", and REST API, CLI, MCP, webhooks and API key management are all dashes for Free , despite /api claiming "Free plan includes 1 hour of processing" and listing "Free plan available" among its API features. [4]
How you pay
Monthly or annual subscription in USD across four tiers (Free, Creator, Studio, Enterprise), metered mainly in hours of source video per month ("AI Clipping: Up to 10 hours/month"), with a separate dubbing/translation hours allowance and a separate "Monthly editor transcription hours" allowance. Annual billing is discounted: "Save up to 40% on annual billing", and both the plan cards and the compare table load with the annual option pre-selected. Underneath, the help centre documents a dual-credit system: "Media Credits are a shared pool measured in minutes" covering Clipping, Captions, Reframing, Transcription, Audiogram and Editor processing, charged "1 minute = 1 Media Credit" for clipping and captions and "1 minute = 2 Media Credits" for reframing and editor processing; "AI Credits" are tracked separately for AI Voiceovers (TTS), Multilingual Dubbing and the Emoji Highlighter, at "1 generation = 1 AI Credit" for voiceover and "2 minutes = 1 AI Credit" for dubbing. Top-ups exist, and the pricing page says "Once purchased, credits will be available instantly and expire in 13 months". Projects also expire by plan: Trial 7 days, Free 7 days, Creator 60 days, Studio 120 days. [4]

CORRECTED: the previous record credited Free with "10 hrs" of monthly editor transcription; the table shows a dash for Free (10 hrs is Creator's figure). Every other row in the table is a dash for Free, including AI Virality Score, auto speaker detection, multi-signal clipping, prompt-first clipping, romanized script, SRT/VTT export, dubbing, social publishing, brand templates and all five API rows. Note a card-vs-table contradiction of their own: the Free card advertises "AI Emoji & Keyword Highlighter", while the table marks "AI Emoji insertion" and "AI Keyword highlighting" as dashes for Free. Button reads "Create Account" in the table and "Start your free trial" on the card.
Creator: Annual billing $9.99/month, "$119.88 billed annually"; monthly billing $24/month. The card's Monthly/Annually toggle loads with "Annually" pre-selected, so $9.99 is the figure shown on arrival. Page prints a bare $; currency is USD per the page's own JSON-LD (priceCurrency USD).
Card bullets: "AI Clipping: Up to 10 hours/month", "AI Captions: Up to 10 hours/month", "Exports in 1080p (watermark-free)", "Up to 2 hours/month of dubbing and translation", "Premium subtitle styles + Auto-Reframed clipping", "Social Media Schedule and Publisher", "Custom Brand Templates", "100+ languages", "API Access and integrations", "Access to unlimited stock media library". Compare table adds: "Faster" processing, upload "Up to 10 GB", 1 member seat, "50+ premium" presets, "3 fonts", "3 templates", ratios "9:16, 16:9, 1:1, 4:5", publishing to "TikTok, Reels, Shorts, LinkedIn", "10 hrs" editor transcription, "Unlimited" stock media, and all five API/automation rows ticked.. Explicitly NOT on Creator per the same table: "Auto reframe tool (standalone)", "Team Studio workspace", "Member roles", "Shared projects", "AI-suggested posting times", voice cloning, SSO, priority support, live chat. The API reference (Create Clips) adds "Max Resolution: 1080p" and "Concurrent Projects: 3".
Studio: Annual billing $29/month, "$348 billed annually"; monthly billing $50/month. Marked "Popular". Toggle defaults to Annually. Currency USD per the page's JSON-LD.
Card bullets: "AI Clipping: Up to 20 hours/month", "AI Captions: Up to 20 hours/month", "Exports in 4K (watermark-free)", "Up to 5 hours/month of dubbing and translation", "Team collaboration features (up to 3 users)", "Advanced AI tools", "100+ languages", "API Access and integrations", "Priority support and faster processing times". Compare table adds: "Priority" processing, upload "Up to 10 GB", "Up to 3" member seats, "6 fonts", "6 templates", publishing to "TikTok, Reels, Shorts, LinkedIn, X, Facebook", "25 hrs" editor transcription, standalone auto reframe, AI-suggested posting times, member roles, shared projects, priority support, live chat support.. CORRECTED: the previous record said SSO was ticked for Studio. It is not — the SSO row is a dash on Free, Creator AND Studio, and is ticked only for Enterprise. "Dedicated account manager" and "Custom onboarding" are likewise Enterprise-only. Voice cloning is the one row marked "Coming soon" on Studio. The API reference adds "Max Resolution: 4K (2160p)" and "Concurrent Projects: 10".
Enterprise: "Custom", card subtitle "For large teams and custom needs", body "Tailored to your organization", with a "Contact us" button. No figure published.
Card bullets: "Unlimited team members", "Custom clipping & captioning hours", "Dedicated account manager & priority support", "Export in 4K (watermark-free)", "Custom dubbing & translation volumes", "SSO, API access & custom integrations". Compare table adds: "Dedicated" processing speed, import "All + custom", upload "Custom", ratios "All", dubbing languages "Custom", voice cloning "Custom", "Unlimited" fonts and templates, supported platforms "All + custom", "Unlimited" seats, and the only ticks for SSO, dedicated account manager and custom onboarding.. The Enterprise column appears only in the wide rendering of "Compare all plans"; the narrow rendering of the same table drops it. Confirmed by parsing both table markups.

The verdict

shortshort for the price per minute, the cuts and the framing; Reap when you need bigger files or link import. Both lists come from the table.

Where shortshort comes out ahead

  • Cuts on complete sentencesEach short opens and closes on a sentence boundary, with a 25% margin around the target length; nothing ends mid-thought.
  • Framing that follows the face, with emphasis zoomsFace and scene tracking move the 9:16 crop; zooms between x1.0 and x1.6 add motion; slides and wide shots stay whole.
  • One page, nothing to learnDrop, choose the count and the length, check, export. No timeline or template to set up.
  • A free manual editor, no account neededBounds, caption words, caption style and title; the MP4 export works without signing in.
  • A public before-and-after galleryEach short next to the video it came from, with the transcript, so the result can be judged before trying.

Where Reap may fit better

  • Bigger files [1]10 GB on Creator and Studio against 2 GB here. The upload endpoint and API introduction say 5 GB per file while the clipping guide says 10 GB, and reframe and dubbing cap at 2 GB.
  • Link import [2]Upload or link, YouTube, Vimeo, Twitch and X. Free, Creator and Studio import from the same four sites, Enterprise adds custom sources, plus a REST API, an MCP server and a Zapier integration.
  • Translation or dubbing [4]Paid plans only, dubbing in 80+ languages. Creator includes 2 hours a month of dubbing and translation and Studio 5 hours, Free none, and voice cloning is marked coming soon on Studio.

How shortshort cuts, frames and captions

Three things the table can only name. The passage, the frame and the captions below are illustrations; the community shows the real thing.

1 · The cut ends on the sentence

2 · The 9:16 crop follows the speaker

3 · Captions timed word by word

Spotlight, one of the four caption styles. Impact, Karaoke and Minimal use the same word timing.

Questions people ask

Is shortshort a good Reap alternative?

It depends on what you need. shortshort turns one video of up to 3 hours into vertical shorts, 3 per video on the free plan and up to 20 on Studio, cut on complete sentences, framed on the speaker and captioned word by word in one of four styles. If that is the job, try it with the 60 free credits and compare the result with what you get from Reap.

How does shortshort pricing compare with Reap?

shortshort charges 1 credit per minute of source video, whatever the number of shorts. Starter is 12 EUR for 240 credits, Creator 29 EUR for 800 and Studio 79 EUR for 3,000, and every account starts with 60 free credits. Reap's own plans, as written on their pricing page, are listed on this page under "What a month costs".

Can I try shortshort before leaving Reap?

Yes. The 60 free credits cover a one-hour video with up to 3 shorts, no card needed. Your source video stays private; only the shorts you export join the community, and every paid plan lets you keep them out of it.
